scadenza asked: Hi, Dottie! I have a question: could I achieve this pastel/dreamy atmosphere in my photos shooting a Kodak Portra NC 160? If yes, should I overexpose it?
I'm a beginner in analog photography, and I couldn't find the Portra NC 400 anywhere in my place. Thanks in advance, I love your work!

P.S.: Sorry for the bad English!

thememorythemadeleine asked: In the images of your RPL review, I notice that there's the same dark spot visible in several of them. It is most obvious in the ones shot in the room with the striped wallpaper, in the upper right of the image. I'm wondering if that's dust on the scans, or something else (i.e. not a problem with the scan).

I've had such a hard time finding careful scanning, I...

Breakthrough with Kodak Ektar 100
In the past, I’ve had limited success with Kodak Ektar.  Many photos I took while traveling the French countryside were totally wrecked by a heavy blue cast on skin tones and rolling green hills.   I had a lot of the film in my fridge, though, so I kept at it.  The results improved over time.  Now it seems I’ve found the sweet spot for Ektar.  My most recent roll has absolutely...

My First Mamiya 645 Photos
Yesterday I photographed with my new-old Mamiya 645 Pro for the first time.  The occasion was my friends’ post-wedding portrait shoot.  I used two different interchangeable film backs, a 220 back loaded with Kodak Portra 400 and a 120 back loaded with Kodak Tmax 400.   I will have to wait a while for the color photos, after mailing them to Richard Photo Lab for developing.  But for instant...

Dream Camera 101: Overexposing Color Film
In the notes of my previous post about film developing at Richard Photo Lab, digitaltoanalog asked my reason for exposing the Kodak Portra 400 at 200 (that is, setting the ISO meter reading to 200 and thereby overexposing the film by one stop) and whether the lab pulled it (developed it for a shorter amount of time). I’ll answer the easier question first - no, the lab did not pull the...

Film Developing at Richard Photo Lab
I recently mentioned that I wanted to up the quality of my film developing. While I can develop my own B&W film in my home darkroom, I really needed to start sending my color film to a pro lab.    When researching labs, the name Richard Photo Lab in Hollywood kept coming up, most notably during my favorite podcast, Inside Analog Photo, but also on the blogs of many film photographers.     ...

Expired TMAX 400
I snapped these photos in a dry cleaner’s shop while my gorgeous friend Melissa tried on her wedding dress. (Pardon the dusty negatives.  My lazy scanning.) I used my Nikon FM2 and an expired roll of bulk-loaded TMAX 400 that my photography teacher gave me.  This was my first time using TMAX or expired film.  I’m not crazy about the expired part because a lot of photos I took...

My Darkroom
While I wait impatiently for my negatives to dry, I’ll show off my very sophisticated, state-of-the-art darkroom. I purchased most of my materials by following the guide and links on From Me To You’s The Art of Black and White Film Processing. Easy peasy.   Any other bathroom/kitchen developers out there, say hey.  :) {In case you’re wondering why they look wonky, the...

adventuresinfilm asked: Re: transparency film. I *love* shooting it. Which is good, because I can't resist when a box of something 'interesting' (which usually means no longer made) comes up on eBay at a good price. I plan on shooting plenty of medium format slide film this year :-)

A shot in the dark (on film)
The beauty of high speed black and white film is magical to me.  I’m still learning how to wield this powerful tool and I’m constantly amazed by the quality of photographs it allows me to take in low light situations.  It reminds me that light is everywhere, I just have to find it. The photos below are from a very dark hotel ballroom, lit only by candles, a few wall sconces and dimmed...
