Versailles: Inside the Palace
So far I’ve posted many photos of Versailles: the Petit Trianon, Maria Antoinette’s Hamlet, and outside the Chateaux.  Finally, here are some shots from the main event, the Chateau’s interior.    All of these are from Kodak Ultra Max 400 film.  I have more photos of the interiors taken with Kodak Ektar 100 that I will post eventually. {taken with Nikon...

Paris: Pere LaChaise Cemetery in B&W
Black and white shots of a magnificent Parisian cemetery are almost too easy, the collection too obvious.  But then I give myself credit for the fact that I took all of these with a fully manual film camera.  The exposure, depth of field and focus are all based on my judgments.  That’s good enough for a relative newbie like me, taking real pictures for less than a year.  I hope the rest of...

irmarosepettitt asked: i love all your recent film rolls that you have shot around france with your nikon fm2. you were in my top 3 for tumblr tuesday this week so i hope some more people check out your blog from that because your photographs are so interesting and i love learning from your posts. anyway i came to say or 'ask' if you would think about posting your rolls of film as individual photographs rather...

Paris: The Pantheon
The Pantheon is an interesting neoclassical structure that pays homage more to liberal thought than to religion, with its inscription of “Live Free or Die” at the alter, Foucault’s Pendulum in the center, and crypt holding the likes of Voltaire and Rousseau down below.  After climbing to the top, it also offers one of the best views of Paris.  Taking...

France: Snapshots
Sometimes the best vacation photos are snapshots. While in France, I visited not only Paris.  I also spent time in the region of Alsace, near the German border.  While there, French friends of Trisha, my traveling companion, showed me great hospitality.  They drove us around, invited us to their home, and fed us lots of cheese and wine.   Today in the mail I received a card and a CD full of...

Versailles: Le Petit Trianon
The Petit Trianon is yet another marvel on the grounds of Versailles.  Originally built by Louis XV for his mistress, Louis XVI gave it to 19-year-old Marie Antoinette for her exclusive use. The weather had changed a bit by the time we finished walking the grounds, as you can see in the last few pictures. {Taken with Nikon FM2, Kodak Ektar 100.  No post-processing by me.}

Paris: Picnic at Notre Dame
As soon as we got settled in our Paris apartment, we hit the market for wine, bread and cheese, then walked to the nearby Notre Dame cathedral for a picnic in the park.   Magnifique!  A lovely way to relax into the city. {Taken with Nikon FM2 and Fuji Superia 200.  Picture of me and Trisha taken by my husband.}

Versailles: Marie Antoinette's Hamlet
Tucked in the grounds of Versailles is Marie Antoinette’s Hamlet.  This was, and still is, a working farm where the Queen played peasant with her ladies.  Walking the grounds was a surreal experience. This Kodak Ektar roll was processed and scanned at a dedicated photo lab. I edited many of the shots (in this post only) using Lightroom to try to remove the...

coldkennels asked: I saw you're having problems scanning colour shots with the Canoscan... what's the problem? I use the same one (the 8800f) for all my rolls, and haven't had any problems at all.

One thing to bear in mind is that labs colour-correct photos for you - they adjust exposure and colours to how they expect them to be. You may have to do the same when scanning at home. It...

Paris: The Louvre
My six days in Paris were so busy, I did not have a chance to visit the inside of the Louvre, but the outside plaza was gorgeous.  The Kodak Ektar film captured the blue skies perfectly.  Unfortunately, it also super-saturated my red dress beyond the point of reality.  That pyramid is even cooler than it appears in pictures and movies. {taken with Nikon FM2, Kodak Ektar 100 film}

Paris Polaroids: Montmartre
Montmartre, the highest point in Paris and home to the Moulin Rouge and the Basilica, is beautiful.  Although it’s extremely touristy and full of scam artists, getting these polaroid shots was well worth the visit. {Moulin Rouge} {Basilica} {Carousel} {taken with my Polaroid SX-70 and Impossible Project Color Shade film}

Paris: View from the Pompidou Center
The Pompidou Center is a modern art museum in Paris.  An escalator attached to the outside of the building carries you to the upper floors, providing a beautiful view of the city.     Photos starring my friend Trisha, my husband and the Eiffel Tower. {taken with Nikon FM2, Kodak Ektar 100}

federov asked: Perhaps you've answered this already and I just can't find it, so I apologize if this is a duplicate question: How do you convert your film into digital images for the web? I've been taking mine to a CVS (hardly professional, I know) and getting a picture CD, but the quality's not great. There will be the odd bit of dust or fuzz visible on the image, for example.

Paris: Pere LaChaise Cemetery
Pere LaChaise is an elaborate cemetery in Paris.  I am not usually one to enjoy the morbid, but this place was amazing.  Walking around visiting the graves was a great way to spend the day, oddly enough.  I took mostly black and white photos, but here are the few color shots I took.    {taken with Nikon FM2, Kodak Ektar 100}

Versailles: Outside the Chateau
I took a lot of pictures at Versailles.  Who could blame me?  Here are a few I’ve gotten developed from outside the main palace. The photos themselves could be better, but the grounds are amazingly beautiful.  There will be many more photos of Versailles, both inside and out.   {Taken with my Nikon FM2, Kodak Ultra Max 400.  Photo of me and my husband taken by...

Paris: Accidental Diptychs
My Nikon is pretty reliable but sometimes has a mind of her own.  For example, she created diptychs of  Notre Dame and the Seine River all by herself.   Ms. Nikon, I approve. {taken with Nikon FM2, Fuji Superia 200}

I’m home from my vacation in France!  I will share some polaroids while I wait to develop my film (12 rolls of Kodak Ektar, 2 rolls of Kodak UltraMax, 2 rolls of Fuji Superia, 3 rolls of Ilford B&W, 2 rolls of Holga). {Eiffel Tower} {Notre Dame} {Carousel in the park} {Breakfast} {Parliament at night} France is an amazingly beautiful country.  Many, many more photos to...

Bonjour, France!
I’m off for a vacation to Alsace and Paris, France!  My Nikon FM2n is coming with me, along with 30 rolls of Kodak Ektar (better safe than sorry), a few rolls of Kodak UltraMax and Ilford Delta black and white, my Polaroid SX-70 with four packs of film, my Holga and my Diana Mini.  My digital SLR is staying home alone.         {Chicago carnival, taken with Minolta XG1 and Fuji Superia...

More Kodak Ektar 100 Shots
Here are more photos from the first roll of Kodak Ektar 100 I shot (and had developed cheaply at the drug store).  The colors are better in these photos, but still unpredictable.   I need to shoot another roll and have it developed at a real photo lab.  If that does not come out right, I will not feel comfortable using this film much during my France vacation.  I’m leaving...

Take Me Out to the Ballgame
While in NYC, I headed to Long Island for a Mets game.  For the occasion, I tried out my first roll of Ilford Delta 3200 black and white film.  This fast film is ideal for low-light situations, although the stadium was surprisingly bright.      I accidentally left my ISO setting on 400 for the first half of the game, changing it to 1600 when I noticed my mistake.  I...

First Roll of Kodak Ektar 100 Film
This morning I shot my first roll of Kodak Ektar 100 film by Lake Michigan, a test before my trip to France next week.  I learned that this professional film and cheap drugstore developing do not mix.  The colors are vibrant but in many shots way off and totally funky.  I hope these problems are not all from my shooting.  I should have taken the roll to a special film lab, but I was so impatient....
